The Cerbère train station is the last station of the cross-border railway Narbonne-Portbou in France . It is right on the border with Spain , the Portbou terminal station is already across the border. Until the new Perpignan – Figueres line went into operation , it was the most important French border station off the Iberian Peninsula, alongside Hendaye station .

Cerbère is located on the Mediterranean coast of southern France on the eastern edge of the foothills of the Pyrenees in the Pyrénées-Orientales department . The passenger station is located on a brick viaduct at a height of 21 meters on the western edge of the old town. The extensive freight yard was "built into" the mountain.
history
The station was opened in 1878 by the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi et du Canal latéral à la Garonne on the Perpignan - Port-Bou line. It has been operated by the SNCF since 1937 and is the stop or end point for long-distance and regional trains as well as the terminus for trains of the Spanish Renfe . In the train station Portbou vice spurts Talgo trains of Renfe and the Elipsos SA drove through to Montpellier , Milan and Zurich . In 1982 the railway line and the station were electrified.

The regular , double-track main line coming from Banyuls-sur-Mer runs directly south of the Cerbère station on a single track in a tunnel to the Spanish border town of Portbou . The second track in this tunnel is the broad gauge of Barcelona, which ends in Cerbère. The tube running parallel to the right in the direction of Portbou ends in the mountain and contains a regular - gauge pull-out track .
The station has an area of 30 hectares, the majority of which is reserved for goods. The total length of the track is 19 kilometers. The Umspuranlage the company Transfesa allows new axle for the transition of freight cars from central European standard gauge of the Iberian broad gauge network and vice versa.
The passenger station has five tracks on three platforms, the elongated station building is on the side facing away from the town. The stump track on the house platform is wide-gauge, and trains from Barcelona end there. The passenger train and freight areas are arranged almost at right angles to one another.
