Hendaye station is the penultimate station on the Bordeaux – Irun line and the terminus on the Spanish Madrid – Hendaye line . Similar to the Latour-de-Carol - Enveitg station , lines with three gauges meet in Hendaye, but the narrow line of the Ferrocarriles Vascos El topo from San Sebastián-Amara ends on the street side in front of the reception building of the state train station.

In Hendaye station, as in the neighboring Spanish station Irun , the French standard gauge and the Iberian broad gauge meet, as well as two different power systems. Both stations are connected by two single-track lines in regular and Iberian broad gauge. The distance between them is 2.27 kilometers, from the last switch of one to the first of the other less than 200 meters. In between, the Bidasoa and the state border running through it are crossed on a bridge .

The broad-gauge platform tracks lie between the regular-gauge platform tracks, and in the middle of the island platforms are wire fences as relics of the border control regime before the Schengen Agreement came into force . The platform tracks are followed by regular-gauge freight train tracks, the Transfesa gauging system, local freight systems and the reloading tracks with a portal crane system. The latter are only connected from the direction of France, which is why there is a three-rail pull-out track in addition to the main tracks to and from Biarritz.

business

Hendaye and Irún train stations are now operated jointly. Passenger trains usually run across the border, end there and return empty. Only Talgo passenger trains can use a gauge change system at Irún station to overcome the difference in gauge and continue to run to Bayonne . There is a lane change system where the wheelsets of freight wagons designed for this purpose, usually from Transfesa , are changed so that they can run in both networks without reloading. The gauging system for passenger coaches of the standard design, which was connected to the wide-gauge platform tracks, was dismantled in 1994 after the through traffic was discontinued.

French regional trains and (from 2017, except for a TGV late in the evening) long-distance trains of the SNCF end here and do not continue to Irún. The night train from Lisbon ends in Hendaye in the morning. Until April 24, 2018 it then drove back to Irún empty and with passengers in the evening from Irún as a night train to Lisbon. Since April 25, 2018, the night train in the direction of Lisbon has already started in Hendaye, making a direct connection to the TGV from Paris possible again.

Outside the station which ends El topo -called meter gauge narrow-gauge railway (Line 2) in Donostia-San Sebastián of the Spanish railway company EuskoTren . There electric railcars operate under an overhead contact line with 1500 V DC voltage. In 1981 it received its own small station building and a raised platform. It enables transfer from Hendaye station to Irun station.
