Geographical location

The city is located in the province of Girona in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia and is located between the northern Girona (41 km) and the southwest to Barcelona (83 km) on the Costa Brava .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring municipalities of Lloret de Mar are Tossa de Mar (northeast on the coast), Llagostera , Vidreres , Maçanet de la Selva , Fogars de la Selva and Blanes (southwest on the coast).

Local division

In addition to the main town of Lloret with its various districts (such as Fenals , Lloret Blau , Aiguaviva , Lloret Verd and La Creu de Lloret ) there are also the towns of Les Alegries , Canyelles , l'Hostalet , el Mas Rossell , Papalús , Sant Pere del Bosc and Santa Cristina .

beaches

Beach in the Bay of Boadella 1983

The main beaches are (from northeast to southwest) Canyelles , Lloret , Fenals , Boadella and Santa Cristina . Since summer 2018, there has been an absolute smoking ban on Sa Boadella beach and four other beach sections. More smoke-free beaches (playas sin humo) are to follow throughout Lloret de Mar. The local politicians are reacting to the desire for more family friendliness with all this (party) tourism.

climate

The climate is Mediterranean with very mild temperatures. These rarely drop below 8 ° C in winter and rarely rise above 30 ° C in summer. The mean annual temperature in Lloret de Mar is 18 ° C. Due to the heat in summer, heat-sensitive people should rather choose the transitional months for a trip.

In the winter months about 35,000 locals (as of Sept. 2006) live in Lloret de Mar; in summer up to 160,000 people stay in town due to tourism . The architecture of the place is determined by hotel blocks. The community tries to counteract this type of development. In winter the city is quiet like most other places on the coast.

history

Place name

The origin of the name "Lloret de Mar" is still unclear. One theory says that the place was founded by the Romans and the name is derived from the Latin place name "Laureatum", which means "place of laurels". According to another theory, the name derives from the settlement "Loredo", which dates back to 980 BC. Was built.

The Iberian fortifications of Puig de Castellet from the 3rd century BC are located near Lloret .

Since the 18th century, the port of Lloret (no longer present) has been gaining in importance due to trade, as evidenced by the houses of the Indianos. These were buildings owned by citizens who settled in Cuba mainly in the 1840s and 1880s . Anyone who made their fortune there sooner or later returned to their home village. Among them were personalities such as the actor Pere Codina Mont or Constantino Ribalaigua , inventor of the Daiquiri cocktail . They were called "Indianos" when they came back with a significant amount of money.

Old mansions were torn down and replaced by stately neoclassical or modernist villas. Only a few of them have survived today, for example the town house or the Museo del mar.

In 1918 wealthy families from Barcelona began to build the first summer houses, such as Emilio Heydrich in 1921. In 1920 the first hotel was opened, the Hotel "Costa Brava".

corruption

Since 2012, the Spanish daily El País has uncovered the entanglements between Xavier Crespos, Mayor of Lloret de Mar from 2003 to 2011 (then a member of the Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya , (CDC) party; today a member of the CiU in Parliament) with the Russian mafia.

In February 2013, El País reported large sums of money, up to 56 million euros in money from the Russian Mafia for money laundering via Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the Seychelles to Petrov. Of this, around 20 million euros were apparently invested in real estate in Lloret and other Catalan communities. Petrov had u. a. Funded gifts and trips to Russia for Crespo. Petrov has been charged and defended himself by saying that he did what he was ordered to do. Víktor Kanaikin of the Spanish Guardia Civil is named as the main mastermind of the Russian money laundering network .

coat of arms

The current coat of arms of Lloret de Mar was introduced on October 25, 1984. It shows a green laurel tree. It is crowned by a wall crown.

tourism

Beach life

landscape

The city is a stronghold for young party tourists, but a little further away it offers many opportunities to go for a walk and enjoy the landscape. Along the beach there are long hiking trails on the cliffs and less visited bays. Currently (2010) a new satellite town is being built .

Going out

Lloret de Mar by night

Lloret de Mar is a party town near Barcelona. Young people from all over Europe and weekenders from Barcelona travel to the town with over 100 bars and discos in a very small space. There are a variety of discos for young people, which are advertised on the beach promenade throughout the day. The rush of visitors created a backdrop similar to Ballermann with drinking tourism. Lloret de Mar is also known as the place of the European " Spring Break ". Local politicians are trying to counter the reputation of being a place of uninhibited parties with various legislative initiatives. For example, administrative offenses such as the consumption of alcohol in public spaces, wearing beach clothing in the city and disturbance of the peace can be sanctioned with draconian fines.

Culture

The Festa Major , the celebrations in honor of the patron saint Santa Cristina , take place on the week of July 24th. On July 24th itself, many shops are closed and in the evening there are big fireworks on one of the beaches.
