Lloret de Mar cemetery
The Lloret de Mar cemetery has a large number of tombs in the style of Modernism and is a listed building as a whole , as are a number of graves for themselves. Just a few hundred meters from the central roundabout of Lloret de Mar , it is one of the main attractions of the city.
General
The city council of Lloret decided on December 10, 1891 to build a new cemetery, thereby implementing older plans. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 29, 1896, and the cemetery was inaugurated on November 2, 1901. In the years that followed, a large number of representative grave structures were built in the style of Modernisme (the Catalan variant of Art Nouveau ) and Noucentisme .
Entrance portal
The entrance to the cemetery leads through a small square with the entrance gate at the head end. It forms the middle of a semicircular lattice fence and can be reached via seven steps. The fence itself stands on a brick wall of the same height. The gate consists of two square pillars topped by urns. The gate is made of the same wrought iron as the fence and was forged by the blacksmith Lluís Grau. The whole complex was built according to designs by Joaquim Artau i Fábregas (1876–1946).
The square in front of the gate is formed on the right by the porteria. This building was also designed by Joaquim Artau i Fábregas in 1899 as a service and porter house. Corpses were stored here and autopsies were performed. Today it serves as a public toilet.
Main axis
The main axis (Avinguda Principal) of the cemetery is the walkway from the entrance portal to the cemetery chapel. The path is lined with a number of important tombs. The chapel was also created in 1899 by Joaquim Artau i Fábregas. The facade is dominated by the entrance gate, which is framed by two false pilasters on two levels. While the top of the gate is designed as a triangle, the end of the middle part in the upper part is designed as a round arch. The building was originally crowned with a cross, which was lost.
