Torreira is a place and a municipality in northern Portugal .
The municipality is located on a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria de Aveiro . The place is one of the centers of fishing on the Beira Litoral .
Nationally known are the listed pousada "Pousada da Ria" , the beach Praia da Torreira and the celebrations in honor of the local saint Pelagius of Córdoba , which take place every year on September 8th.
history
The first mention goes back to a deed of donation from the year 1283, with which King D. Dinis bequeathed the Gelfa promontory (then Guelfa ) to the nobleman Pedro Bermutes, which mainly consisted of dunes . However, a village only emerged with the increasing silting up of the area, when fishermen from the region set up tool sheds and anchorages and stayed here more and more often, probably not until the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the 18th century. The first small church was built in 1732.
