Sant Hilari Sacalm is a Spanish municipality in the province of Girona and is located in the Comarca Selva region , which is in the autonomous province of Catalonia .

The Sant Miquel mountain

Sant Hilari Sacalm is the main town of the Guilleries pre- coastal mountain range and is bordered by the Pla de les Arenes (1086 meters) in the west, the Serra de las Guillerías (1182 meters) in the north-west, the Sant Miquel mountain (1204 meters in the north-east ) and in the Contains east by the Serra del Pedró (929 meters). Because of the numerous streams that arise in this densely wooded and mountainous municipality, the place is also called “La Vila de les cent fonts” ( “ The village of a hundred springs”).

The marketing of the natural mineral water from the local springs plays a central role in the local economy; Among other things, the mineral well of the important Font Vella spring is located in the municipality, which is owned by the company Aguas de Lanjaron Font Vella and is affiliated to the internationally active food group Danone . The Font Vella brand mineral water, which has been commercially marketed since 1892 and which is also bottled (glass and plastic) in seven different formats and packaged on pallets in Sant Hilari Sacalm, is one of the best-known and best-selling Spanish mineral waters. The company employs 250 people on a 25  hectare site and produces 650 million liters annually.

The Font d'Or mineral water from the Vichy Catalan group , which has been awarded gold medals by six different Spanish organizations , also comes from Sant Hilari Sacalm.

The woodworking industry, tourist carving and turning work as well as agriculture offer the place additional sources of income and jobs. Due to its secluded and wooded location, the place is particularly valued by hunters and mushroom pickers .

Passion play on Good Friday

Every year on Good Friday in Sant Hilari Sacalm, a passion play that is known far beyond the borders of Catalonia takes place. The performance of this Via Crucis Vivent ('Living Way of the Cross') begins at 9:00 p.m. on the church forecourt with the accusation and condemnation of Jesus Christ and continues with the performance of his subsequent story of suffering, which extends over a total of fourteen stations in the town center and with the crucifixion of all three condemned to death ends on a hill outside the village center. The roles of the approximately 300 actors involved in the Passion Play (around 80 of whom are uniformed Roman legionaries ) are taken on by the families from the village, often in many generations. Easter performances in Sant Hilari Sacalm go back to a tradition that goes back more than 250 years.

The Passion Play Via Crucis Vivent in Sant Hilari Sacalm was declared a Festa patrimonial d'interès nacional by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2010 .
