Martin Noël (born November 6, 1956 in Berlin ; † November 18, 2010 in Bonn ) was a German painter , draftsman and graphic artist .

life and work

Martin Noël attended the Aloisius College in Bad Godesberg from 1969 to 1976 and studied painting and free graphics at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences from 1980 to 1987 . The FAZ wrote in an obituary that the artist's eye always found what was overlooked: “His drawings tell of a rare ability to empathize with the effects of lines, circles, surfaces and all forms of visibility. His attention was focused on the cracks in the walls and the bizarre pattern of a shattered window pane. "For example, the cracks in the floor slabs that were created by the bombing of the New York World Trade Center in 1993 inspired the delicate motifs of his series" New York Lines ".

Another focus of his work was the linoleum and woodcut , which he shaped with its unmistakable shape structure. In his woodcuts “the relationship between line and surface is of central importance. Different tension and composition relationships can be exhibited: Linear branches and ramifications stand in contrast to bundles and condensations. Network-like expansions over the entire surface contrast with partial centering. "

Noël was a versatile artist; His activities ranged from decorating the interior of the Bad Godesberg Church of St. Hildegardis to artistically designed bookmarks and, for example, the cover design for the CD Tarantella by the Swedish musician Lars Danielsson . He produced numerous artist books and portfolios, including the cassette Between the Ears with woodcuts to poems by Zsuzsanna Gahse . In particular, he dealt with the sculptor and painter Otto Freundlich , who died in the Majdanek concentration camp in 1943 , one of the first representatives of abstract art ; in 2006 this led to his exhibition “Hommage à Otto Freundlich” in the Mies van der Rohe house in Berlin .

He has received numerous prizes, including the Max Ernst Scholarship in 1987, the Young West Art Prize in 1991 and the City of Bonn Art Prize in 1993, as well as scholarships, for example in 1990/91 from the German Study Center in Venice , in 1998 from the Kunststiftung NRW and Letter Foundation , Cologne and in 2003 from the Art Fund Foundation , Bonn. Martin Noël was a member of the German Association of Artists .

His work is represented in many public collections, for example in the Bundeskunstsammlung , the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz , the Museum Morsbroich , the Erhard Witzel Collection, Quadrart Dornbirn , and the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern .

Martin Noël was married, had four children and lived in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. He died of a brain tumor at the age of 54 .

Quote

“Characteristic of Martin Noël's works, which are often designed as series, are their simple complexity and their primeval, haunting structure of forms. In terms of their content, they evade intellectual attempts at explanation, which is entirely in keeping with the artist's intention, who wants to leave as many possible associations open as possible. Most of them are non-representational, poetic images that give rise to associations, often guided by the title. [... It is] not about the artist to portray reality, but rather to create an awareness of how to deal with reality. This attitude corresponds to his formal language, which moves between concretion and abstraction. "
