Geographical location

The hill Puig de Castellet is located about 2 kilometers north of Lloret de Mar. It is part of the Serralada Litoral coastal mountain range . With a height of 197.42 meters above sea level , it offers a wide view over the sea, the city of Lloret de Mar and the coastal area to Blanes and the Tordera river .

Iberian fortification

Excavation site

The wide view was probably the reason for the construction of an Iberian fortification on the hill. From here you can also visit the Iberian sites in Montbarbat (approx. 6.5 km away, towards the interior), Turó de Sant Joan de Blanes (approx. 6 km away, towards the south) and Turó Rodó (approx. 2 km away, Towards the sea).

The fortification was built in the middle of the third century BC, i.e. between the first and second Punic wars , and was used for about half a century. After the second Punic War, around 200 BC, the complex was abandoned.

The complex was surrounded by walls on three sides, the south-eastern reinforcement represents a hill. Two watchtowers flanked the 650 m² defense system. Inside the fortress, 11 rectangular buildings, each with two or three rooms, were attached to the defensive wall. The middle formed a free space.

Excavations

The site was discovered in 1943. From 1968 sporadic excavations took place between 1975 and 1986 systematically. In addition to the remains of the wall, there were mainly ceramic finds, as well as bronze jewelry and some iron tools.

Today the area is fenced in to prevent vandalism. Visits are possible. It is part of the Ruta dels Ibers. This route connects Iberian sites in Catalonia and is organized by the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya .
