Karl Mahrer (born March 4, 1955 in Vienna ) was a member of the federal police guard and, as one of two state police vice-presidents of the state police headquarters in Vienna, held the rank of general . Until the security authorities were restructured in 2012 , Mahrer was the state police commander for Vienna. In August 2017 it became known that he would run for ninth place on the Kurz list (ÖVP) in the 2017 National Council election. On November 9th he was sworn in as a member of the National Council.

Career

Between 1974 and 1976, Mahrer completed basic training in the school department of the security guard . After that he served as a classified civil servant in the Ottakring security guard until 1981 . In 1981 he completed the basic training course for civil servants, after which he continued to work in Ottakring. Between 1982 and 1984 Mahrer attended the course to become a senior officer of the security guard, after which he worked in various district departments.

In 1987 Mahrer was appointed head of the information center of the General Inspectorate of the Security Guard, which he remained until 1989, after which he worked in the organization department until 1991. From 1991 to 2000 Mahrer was commandant of the Hietzing security guard district department . Then Mahrer switched back to the General Inspectorate, where he was initially head of the logistics department. In 2002, Mahrer was appointed deputy general inspector and head of the human resources department.

After the merger of the police and gendarmerie , Mahrer's post, as well as that of the state police commander (as a continuation of the function of inspector general), was advertised again. Roland Horngacher was able to assert himself against Mahrer, who was again appointed as a deputy, although not a member of the federal police, but a police lawyer. After the abuse of office affair , in the course of which Horngacher had to be relieved of his office and even had to resign from the police force, Mahrer was appointed state police commander for Vienna on January 23, 2009. After the restructuring of the security authorities came into force on September 1, 2012, Mahrer was appointed to one of the two state police vice-presidents of Vienna alongside Michaela Kardeis . His superior was State Police President Gerhard Pürstl . On April 1, 2018, Michael Lepuschitz succeeded him as Deputy Police President in Vienna.

In 2009, Mahrer completed his “ Bachelor of Arts in Police Leadership” studies in eight weeks at the Wiener Neustadt University of Applied Sciences , whereby earlier examinations from his training as a police officer (before the Bologna process ) were taken into account.

He has been a member of the National Council since the 2017 National Council election. In July 2019, he followed Werner Amon as security spokesman in the ÖVP parliamentary club .
