The following line-up changes were made in the final race:

The favorites were mainly the relays from the USA and the United Team. Germany's team was significantly weakened by the suspension for violating the doping regulations for Grit Breuer . So Great Britain was traded as another medal candidate.

In the race, the expected duel between the two favorites developed. After the first change it was still very close. The united team moved to the inside track in a leading position. Great Britain was behind the USA and Canada. Before the finish curve, Gwen Torrence brought the US team to the top and even got a small lead shortly before the handover. Charmaine Crooks also showed a strong race for Canada and moved in second in front of the United Team and Great Britain. Now the gaps got bigger. Jearl Miles for the US season was clearly ahead of Olga Nazarova, who had put the United Team in second place. Canada followed even further behind. Behind them it got tighter, the British were still in fourth place just ahead of the other teams. But for the next two hundred meters the situation changed again. Nasarowa caught up with Miles, while Jennifer Stoute brought the British past Canada and passed the baton to the British final runner Sally Gunnell by a clear margin, almost 30 meters behind the two leading teams. The duel between the USA and the United Team continued at the top. Rochelle Stevens led for the USA, Olha Bryshina followed her. For Gunnell there were no more prospects of getting closer, the British woman herself had a few meters ahead of the following seasons from Canada, Germany and Jamaica. Bryshina attacked the leading Stevens while she was still on the finish line, but she fought hard. Seventy meters from the finish, Bryshina then pulled past and her team won the Olympic Games over the USA. Great Britain won the bronze medal ahead of Canada, Jamaica and the German relay.
