Charmaine Crooks (born August 8, 1962 in Mandeville , Manchester Parish ) is a former Canadian sprinter and middle-distance runner of Jamaican origin.

Career

First she started over 400 m . In 1980 she became the Pan American junior champion. The Olympic boycott of their country prevented a start at the Olympic Games in Moscow . In the alternatively organized Liberty Bell Classic , she came second. In 1982 she won the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane with the Canadian team in the 4 x 400 meter relay .

In 1983 she reached the semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki and came fourth with the Canadian relay. Shortly afterwards, she achieved her greatest individual success with the victory at the Pan American Games in Caracas .

The following year she was seventh at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and won silver in the 4 x 400 meter relay along with Jillian Richardson , Molly Killingbeck and Marita Payne . At the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Games in Paris in 1985 she won a bronze medal in an individual competition, and in 1986 she defended her title with the Canadian team at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh .

At the World Championships in Rome in 1987 and at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, she reached the semi-finals. With the team she was again fourth. The Canadian quartet did not finish at the final of the Olympic Games.

In 1990 she improved the Canadian record in the 800-meter run to 1: 58.52 min. Over the same distance she was fifth at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Seville in 1991 and reached the semifinals at the World Championships in Tokyo . In the season she finished sixth with the Canadian team. She also advanced to the semifinals at the 1992 Olympic Games . With the season she finished fourth.

Her last big success was the silver medal over 800 m at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. At the World Championships in Gothenburg in 1995 and in Seville in 1997 , she was eliminated in the preliminary stages as well as at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Eight times she was Canadian champion over 400 m and twice over 800 m.

In 1994 she founded the company NGU Consultants, which she still manages today , which offers sports marketing and management as well as business consulting. In 1996 she was elected to the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). From 2000 to 2004 she was a member of the IOC. She serves on the board of directors of the Canadian Olympic Committee and is currently vice president of the World Olympians Association.
