Date: August 8, 1992

Three Kenyans, two Spaniards and one runner each from Algeria, Germany, Canada, Qatar, the USA and the United Team had qualified for the final.

World champion Noureddine Morceli from Algeria was a clear favorite. Other medal candidates were the middle-distance athletes from Kenya, who were always difficult to assess, the two Germans Hauke Fuhlbrügge as third in the World Cup and Jens-Peter Herold, fourth in the World Cup and also European champion , as well as Fermín Cacho, the fifth in the World Cup , who competed here as a Spaniard with home advantage.

In the slowly started final - first round in 1: 02.25 min - the Kenyan Joseph Chesire led ahead of Herold. It stayed that way in lap two, which was a little slower with 1: 04.58 min. Morceli was in the main field and so it went on the last four hundred meters. Chesire, Herold, the American Jim Spivey and Cacho led a tightly packed field. However, the pace was much faster now. The third lap was completed in 55.72 s. A long sprint began on the back straight, numerous runners tried to get into a good position on the outside. Ten of them were still in the running for the medals. There was a gap behind it. Even before the finish curve, Cacho took the chance to push forward on the inside lane. Resolutely, he pulled past Chesire and got a small lead on the bend. Morceli, on the other hand, had missed the connection and only came to the home straight in fifth. Chesire, Herold and Mohamed Suleiman from Qatar were still ahead of him. Fermin Cacho had no trouble maintaining his top position and won the Olympic gold medal to the cheers of the audience. Behind him, the Moroccan Rachid El Basir was the fastest on the home straight and won the silver medal. Mohamed Suleiman came in third in front of Joseph Chesire. The Kenyan Jonah Birir came in fifth ahead of the 1988 bronze medalist Jens-Peter Herold, at that time still starting for the GDR. Morceli finished the race in a disappointing and almost inexplicable seventh place. Four years later in Atlanta he was supposed to make up for what he had neglected here and became Olympic champion there .

Due to the first two slow laps, records here remained untouched.

Fermin Cacho won the first Spanish gold medal in the men's 1500 meters .
Mohamed Suleiman was the first Qatar Olympic medalist.
