Rüdiger Stenzel

Rüdiger Stenzel (born April 16, 1968 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a former German track and field athlete and Olympic participant who was successful as a 1500 meter runner in the 1990s . His greatest success is second place at the 1997 World Indoor Championships .

In 1995 he was the winner of the European Cup final.

In 1994, 1997 and 1999 he was German champion in the 1500 meter run, in 1993 and 1995 with the 4 x 1500 meter relay and in 1996 and 1999 German champion in the short-distance cross-country run .

With his best time of 3: 33.60 min in the 1500 meter run, he was fifth on the all-time German best list at the end of the 2005 season.

The first significant victory of his athletic career he achieved in 1986 at the German indoor youth championships over 800 meters. Here, as a newcomer, he completely surprisingly beat the high favorite Alexander Adam (ASV Köln) with two hundredths of a second ahead in 1: 52.56 minutes.

The numerous duels with Dieter Baumann , whom he was the first national athlete to defeat over 1500 meters at the athletics meeting in Rhede in 1996 , are remembered .

Rüdiger Stenzel holds the German outdoor record with the 4 x 1,500 meter club relay of TV Wattenscheid 01.

He belonged to the sports club TV Wattenscheid (first coach: Peter Brüggemann). With a height of 1.80 m, he had a competition weight of 65 kg. In 2002 he ended his sports career.

Rüdiger Stenzel works as a branch manager at the Stadtsportbund in Bochum. He is not related to the equally successful long-distance runner Kurt Stenzel .
