Thierry Sabine
Thierry Sabine (born June 13, 1949 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , † January 14, 1986 in Mali ) was a French automobile and motorcycle racer and founder of the Dakar Rally .
Career
The idea for the rally came to him in 1977 during the Abidijan-Nice rally . He was lost in the desert for several days . The first Paris-Dakar rally started on December 26, 1978 and was organized by Sabine and the Thierry Sabine organization that was specially founded for this purpose . In addition, he was also socially involved in the countries through which the rally led. So he founded z. B. a hospital in Dakar .
On January 14, 1986, he and the chansonnier Daniel Balavoine , the journalist Nathaly Odent , the pilot François Xavier-Bagnoud and the radio technician Jean-Paul Le Fur died on a helicopter flight during the rally. The helicopter crashed on a dune in Mali near Lake Gossi . A memorial plaque was placed at the crash site.
