Result

April 7, 1896

With only eight participants there were no preliminary runs. From the start the Frenchman Albin Lermusiaux took the lead, but was unable to break away from his pursuers. When it came to the last lap, he could no longer keep his pace. The Australian Teddy Flack - actually correct name Edwin Flack - and the American Arthur Blake passed by. Flack prevailed in the end and won his first Olympic victory, which was followed by a second two days later with his success over 800 meters . Blake came second and Lermusiaux was able to maintain his third place. Fourth was the German Carl Galle in front of four middle distance athletes from Greece.
