The favorites over 1500 meters included the French Jules Ladoumègue and the two Finns Eino Purje and Harri Larva. The world record runner, the German Otto Peltzer, had surprisingly failed in the run-up - he had injured himself playing handball. The race started slowly. After the three German finalists had led the field, the two Finns, now in the lead, went through the 800-meter mark at 2:04 minutes. On the back straight of the last lap, Ladoumègue took the lead, only Larva could follow. Larva only prevailed 20 meters from the finish line and thus secured the gold medal in an Olympic record time . Bronze went to Purje, the German champion Hans Wichmann came fourth.
