The women's high jump at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam was held on August 5, 1928 in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium. Twenty athletes took part.

The Olympic champion was the Canadian Ethel Catherwood with a new world record, ahead of the Dutchwoman Lien Gisolf and the American Mildred Wiley .

On August 5, 1928, there was a qualifying round. The qualification height was 1.40 meters. The final for the qualified participants took place on the same day.

The jump attempts of the individual athletes are not recorded. The jumpers had to complete the following heights: 1.20 m - 1.25 m - 1.30 m - 1.35 m and 1.40 m.

Only one of the high jumpers who competed was eliminated.

As in the qualification, the jump attempts of the individual athletes are not recorded in the final either. The jumpers had to complete the following heights: 1.30 m - 1.40 m - 1.45 m - 1.48 m - 1.51 m - 1.54 m - 1.56 m etc. in 3-centimeter steps . The amount of victory was then obtained from a re-measurement after the successful attempt by the gold medalist.

Carolina Gisolf secured the only athletics medal for the host country. Like the American Mildred Wiley, she crossed 1.56 m and won silver in front of Wiley. The gold medal went to the Canadian Ethel Catherwood with 1,595 m. She was an athlete who valued her appearance and always had a lipstick with her when she competed.
