qualification

August 9, 2012, 9:30 a.m.

The qualification was carried out in two groups. The qualification height for reaching the final directly was 1.96 m. Since only one jumper jumped this height (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best athletes from both groups to twelve participants (highlighted in light green). So the final was finally reached with at least 1.93 m in the second attempt and no previous miss.

After reaching the height of 1.93 m, the ten jumpers who had managed the height in the first or second attempt and without previous unsuccessful attempts were already safely qualified. They waived their jumps over 1.96 m. Ariane Friedrich, Svetlana Radzivil, Irina Gordejewa and Antonia Stergiu fought for the two remaining places, with only Radzivil jumping the height and Gordejewa also making it into the final because of the fewest number of failed attempts.

final

The two medal winners from Russia: in
front Anna Tschitscherowa (gold), next to her Svetlana Schkolina (bronze)

August 11, 2012, 7:00 p.m.

Twelve athletes had qualified for the final. In the final, three Russian women, two US women and one athlete each from Belgium, France, Lithuania, Sweden, Spain, Turkey and Uzbekistan competed for the medals.

After the Croatian Blanka Vlašić's cancellation due to injury , the favorite role fell to the Russian world champion Anna Tschitscherowa. The US athlete Chaunté Lowe was her strongest competitor. The Belgian Olympic champion from 2008 Tia Hellebaut was also in the final, but this time she was not given any medal chances.

Seven athletes were still in the competition after the third height of 1.97 m. In addition to Hellebaut, Lowe and Tschitscherowa, Brigetta Barrett from the USA, the Russian Swetlana Schkolina, the Uzbek Svetlana Radzivil and the Spaniard Ruth Beitia were there. Hellebaut, Lowe and Radzivil failed at the height of 2.00 m. The two Russians were ahead of Beitia, who had a miss jump at 1.97 m, without a previous attempt. Barrett took fourth place with two failed attempts.

The bar was set at 2.03 m. Beitia tore three times and was eliminated. Chicherova took the height in the first, Barrett in the second and Schkolina in the third attempt. With that Barrett had pushed himself in front of Shkolina. The next height was now 2.05 m. Chicherova skipped it in the second attempt, her two competitors tore three times each. With that Anna Tschitscherowa was Olympic champion. She missed the Olympic record set by her compatriot Jelena Slessarenko in 2004 by just one centimeter. Silver went to Brigetta Barrett and bronze to Swetlana Schkolina, who had both achieved 2.03 m, Barrett however one attempt earlier than Schkolina. Ruth Beitia also managed the 2-meter mark and was fourth, ahead of Tia Hellebaut in fifth and Chaunté Lowe in sixth. These two were 1.97 m tall. The Uzbek Svetlana Radzivil also reached 1.97 m and came in seventh.
