career path

Ariane Friedrich belonged to the sports promotion group of the Hessian police , in which she completed her studies to become a police commissioner at the Hesse University of Applied Sciences . In December 2015 she moved to the Thuringian Police Education Center in Meiningen , where she was preparing for the qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the “Summer” sports promotion group. In addition to her private life as a mother, the trained detective works in recruiting young people for the Thuringian police.

Athletic career

Friedrich had not got beyond 1.93 m until 2007 and was a jumper of predominantly national importance. In the indoor season she increased to 2.02 m, but was only eighth at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia . In the open-air season she set a personal best at the European Athletics Cup in Annecy on June 22, 2008 with 2.03 m and started at the 2008 Olympic Games as a medal candidate. Although she managed to jump over 1.85 m, 1.93 m and 1.96 m in the first attempt, she was eliminated early with three broken 1.99 m and was initially seventh. Due to the subsequent disqualification due to positive doping results of three high jumpers ( Anna Tschitscherowa , Jelena Slesarenko and Wita Palamar ), she is now in fourth place at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The following year, she improved her personal best in the hall on February 15, 2009 in Karlsruhe to 2.05 m and triumphed at the 2009 European Indoor Championships when she clearly defeated her great rival Blanka Vlašić . At the International Stadium Festival in Berlin, she increased Heike Henkel's German outdoor record to 2.06 m in a duel with Vlašić on June 14, 2009 . It ranks fifth on the all-time world best list.

Friedrich remained undefeated for a long time in 2009, only to be defeated by Blanka Vlašić in Monaco. The big duel at the World Championships in Berlin turned into a three-way battle with Russian Anna Tschitscherowa . Friedrich was able to jump 2.02 m, but initially only got the bronze medal. Due to the disqualification of Chicherova in 2018, she was subsequently awarded the silver medal, which was then presented to her on September 1, 2019 at the ISTAF. Friedrich broke off the 2009 season after two competitions with results far below their level.

In 2010 Friedrich won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Barcelona with a height of 2.01 m. On December 22, 2010, she tore an Achilles tendon during training . This meant that she could not compete in the 2010/2011 indoor season, and she also had to forego participating in the 2011 World Championships in Daegu . In October 2011 it was announced that she had to cancel a planned training stay in Qatar because she was "undesirable" as a female athlete in the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence .

In 2012 she was nominated by the DOSB for the Olympic Games in London due to fulfilled B-norm , but missed the final there with 1.93 m.

At the 2013 World Championships in Athletics could not attend due to a knee injury. Since the Olympic Games in London in 2012, Friedrich had not contested any major championships due to injury problems and started a comeback in the following indoor season after the baby break in 2015.

In 2016 Friedrich came in 3rd place at the German Indoor Championships and took 4th place at the German Championships with 1.84 m, but injured himself and had to give up hope of participating in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

In 2018, on Sunday, July 22nd, she was officially adopted from the national team by the German Athletics Association (DLV) as part of the German Championships in Nuremberg.

Club affiliations

As a youth, Friedrich trained at the LG Kaufungen, after which she joined the TV Hessisch Lichtenau. She has been working for LG Eintracht Frankfurt since 2003 and was trained by Günter Eisinger.

With a height of 1.79 m, she had a competition weight of 57 kg.

Ariane Friedrich lives with bobsleigh Olympic champion André Lange and their daughter (born in 2014) near Erfurt in Thuringia.

Sexual Harassment Controversy

In April 2012, Ariane Friedrich published the full name and place of residence of the man on her Facebook page who had sent her a suggestive email with an attached photo of his genitals. According to her information, she did not look at the picture. The publication and the subsequent house search of the e-mail sender triggered a lot of media coverage. The alleged fact that, as a police officer, she practices some form of vigilante justice has been particularly criticized. In July 2012, the man confessed to the sexual harassment. He had to pay a fine of 1050 euros.
