Remarks:

  • On June 8, 2008, the Russian Sergei Morozov scored a time of 1:16:43 h at the Russian championship in Saransk , with which he undercut the world record by 33 seconds. However, since there were no doping controls during the competition, the time could not be recognized as a world record. Morosow was not one of the Russian walkers here in London , but it must be pointed out in this context that all six Russian participants from both London walking competitions in 2012 were disqualified after violating the doping regulations.

Routing

The walkers had to cope with ten times a two-kilometer loop that led over The Mall along St. James's Park to the Victoria Memorial . The course turned onto Constitution Hill and passed Buckingham Palace along Green Park . After a turning point, it went back to the start and finish point.

In the following description, the three Russian walkers who were disqualified for doping reasons, some of whom played an important role in leadership and persecution groups, are not considered from the outset.

The Irishman Robert Heffernan and the Pole Grzegorz Sudoł took over the management work early on, but the field initially remained together. Later the Japanese Yūsuke Suzuki pushed forward. Again and again he launched attacks to set himself apart from the field of participants. He was able to stay at the front until eight kilometers and was always a few seconds ahead of a large group of pursuers. Halfway through the course, a group of seven with the Chinese Chen Ding and Wang Zhen, the Australian Jared Tallent, Erick Barrondo from Guatemala, the Mexican Eder Sánchez, the Spaniard Miguel Ángel López and the Colombian Luis Fernando López took the lead.

A short time later, the Frenchman Bertrand Moulinet launched an attack. He had a lead of seven seconds in the meantime, but was caught up again by the field. This was the moment Chen had chosen to launch his attack. Eight other athletes were initially able to go along with Chen's increased tempo. But at sixteen the group had shrunk to three walkers. Chen, Wang and Barrondo were five seconds ahead of Tallent, with Sánchez another six seconds behind them. A little later, López was able to catch up with the leaders again. However, he was disqualified immediately following his third warning.

Again it was Chen who picked up the pace. His compatriot Wang couldn't keep up and fell behind. At the beginning of the last lap, Chen had worked out an eight-second lead over Barrondo, with Wang just behind. Barrondo pushed again and was able to pull away from Wang.

Chen won the competition with a new Olympic record . He won the first ever Chinese medal in Olympic walking . Erick Barrondo crossed the finish line eleven seconds behind him, becoming Guatemala's first medalist at the Olympic Games. The bronze medal was won by a Chinese, Wang Zhen, 28 seconds behind Barrondo. With Cai Zelin on the next place, the third Chinese also made it into the top four.
