All three Kenyans, two Ethiopians, two Moroccans and two Americans qualified for the final. There were also participants from Finland, France, Italy, Moldova, Turkey and Uganda.

The Kenyans with the 2008 Olympic champion Brimin Kipruto, the reigning world champion Ezekiel Kemboi and Africa champion Abel Mutai were considered the favorites.

The final wasn't a quick race at first. The US athlete Donald Cabral took the lead on the first two laps. His 1000 meter intermediate time was 2: 52.70 min, which would have resulted in an end time of about 8:39 min. With three laps to go, Mutai took the lead and accelerated the pace. Kemboi, Kipruto and the Ethiopian Roba Gari kept up. The second kilometer with Mutai at the top was only slightly faster than the first at 2: 50.56 minutes. With two laps to go, Kipruto had to let go, while the French European Champion Mahiedine Mekhissi continued to work his way up and was able to catch up with Gari, Mutai and Kemboi at the beginning of the last lap. With him, the American Evan Jager came forward. On the back straight Kemboi took the lead, Gari and Jager now fell behind. On the last jump over the moat, Kemboi had a lead of ten meters over Mutai and Mekhissi. In fourth place, Gari made the gap to Mutai and Mekhissi smaller again, while Ezekiel Kemboi won the race. On the home stretch, Mekhissi passed Mutai and won silver. Mutai was able to fend off the attack of Gari, who had come forward again. Kipruto finished fifth, Jager sixth. Kemboi had covered the last kilometer in 2: 35.306 minutes, about fifteen seconds faster than on the first two 1000 meter sections. After slow start, however, no better ending time more was possible, who still of 1,988 originated Olympic record of his countryman Julius Kariuki was faster by more than thirteen seconds.

Ezekiel Kemboi ran for the tenth Kenyan Olympic victory in this discipline. It was Kenya's eighth win in a row.
