The Olympic boycott prevented the participation of Kenyan runners, especially world record holder Henry Rono . The Federal German Vice European Champion from 1978 , Patriz Ilg , later European Champion 1982 and World Champion 1983 , was absent for the same reason. Bronislaw Malinowski from Poland, silver medalist from 1976 , and Filbert Bayi from Tanzania, who had switched from the 1500-meter course to this discipline, were now the favorites.
Bayi, who had always liked to run ahead in previous races, took the lead at high speed right after the start. At the 2000 meter mark, he was on a world record course and had a lead of 30 meters on Malinowski. But the Pole was able to slowly close the gap until he was only five meters behind at the beginning of the last lap. After the moat, Bronisław Malinowski passed the exhausted Bayi and was Olympic champion at the finish. Filbert Bayi defended his second place against the still strongly emerging Ethiopian Eshetu Tura. These two runners won the silver and bronze medals. The Spaniards Domingo Ramón and Francisco Sánchez took fourth and fifth place.
With his silver medal, Filbert Bayi ensured Tanzania's first ever medal at the Olympic Games.
Eshetu Tura won the first Ethiopian medal in this discipline.
