Wolfgang Konrad (athlete)

Wolfgang Konrad (born December 22, 1958 in Landeck ) is a former Austrian obstacle , medium and long-distance runner . As an organizer, he has become known through the organization of the Vienna City Marathon . In 2013 Wolfgang Konrad was named Tyrolean of the year by Governor Günther Platter and CLUB TIROL .

Sporting successes

In 1978 he came at the World Cross Country Championships in Glasgow on the 118th place. At the ISTAF in Berlin he improved the Austrian record for the first time over 3000 m obstacle in the time of 8: 32.6 minutes. In the same discipline he took part in the European Athletics Championships in Prague , but dropped out in the preliminary run.

In 1979 he reached eleventh place at the European Athletics Indoor Championships over 3000 m in Vienna and 148th place at the World Cross Country Championships in Limerick . In the summer of that year he celebrated victory at the ISTAF in Berlin in the obstacle course and increased his Austrian record to 8: 22.8 min. In the world best list of the year 1979 he was classified in third place.

In 1980 he was the first Austrian to stay below the 3:40 mark over 1500 m in the hall and improved the Austrian record to 3: 39.56 minutes. In the obstacle course, he qualified for the Moscow Olympic Games . He made it to the semifinals, but didn't make it to the finals.

On August 20, 1982, at the ISTAF, he again improved his Austrian record with 8: 17.22 minutes and made it to third place in the world's best list of the year for a second time. At the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1982 , he reached fifth place.

In 1982, 1984 and 1985 he won the Natternbach New Year's Eve run .

In 1986 in Stuttgart he took part in the European Championships over 3000 m obstacle for the third time, but was eliminated in the preliminary run. In his last race as a competitive athlete, he contested the Vienna City Marathon in 2:23:17 h in 1988.

He won a total of 13 Austrian championship titles, including six over 3000 meters obstacle (1978-80, 1982, 1985, 1986), four in cross-country running (1979, 1980, 1985, 1988) and one each in the 3 × 1000 m relay (1980) , over 1500 meters in the hall (1984) and over 3000 meters in the hall (1986).

Wolfgang Konrad is 1.84 m tall and weighed 65 kg at competition times. He was accompanied by Hubert Millonig trained and launched for the LAC Innsbruck, the TS Innsbruck and triathlon Danube Island Vienna. He is married and has two sons.

Activities as an organizer

During his time as an active athlete, Wolfgang Konrad began to work in the organization of events. In 1983 he ran his first competition at the Nikololauf in Mödling. As a result, he was active in the organization in several road races, triathlons and mountain bike races. In 1988 he organized the first edition of the Austrian Women's Run together with Helga Kotas . In 1989 he took over the leadership of the Vienna City Marathon. Since then, the competition has developed into Austria's most popular sporting event and has been awarded the IAAF Road Race Gold Label . In 2011 he organized the Austrian National Cycling Championships in Eisenstadt.
