The actual favorites did not take part. The world record holder Marita Koch only competed over 400 meters , the 1978 European champion Lyudmila Kondratjewa , Olympic champion over 100 meters , had to cancel due to injury. And vice European champion Marlies Göhr only competed in her actual special discipline, the 100-meter run, in which she won the silver medal here. The US runner Evelyn Ashford could not participate because of the US boycott. The only remaining favorite was the 1976 Olympic champion Bärbel Wöckel - at that time under her name Bärbel Eckert. Promising contenders for further medals included Wöckel's team mate Romy Müller, Merlene Ottey from Jamaica, Natalja Botschina, USSR, and the three British runners who made it to the final.

The race then turned out to be more exciting than perhaps expected. Botschina, Müller, Ottey and Wöckel came out of the curve pretty much on par, who had to run on the unfavorable inner lane. On the home stretch, however, Bärbel Wöckel clearly prevailed and won the gold medal with a new Olympic record time . Until shortly before the finish, Ottey was still in second place, but was caught by Natalja Botschina, who took silver with a hundredth of a second ahead of Merlene Ottey. Romy Müller was fourth ahead of Kathryn Smallwood, later Kathy Cook.

Bärbel Wöckel won the third GDR Olympic victory in a row in this discipline. She personally repeated her success over this distance from the previous Olympic Games, which no other athlete had achieved before her.

Merlene Ottey won the first Jamaican women's 200 meter medal .
