Sonia Lannaman

Sonia Lannaman ( Sonia May Lannaman , after marriage Garmston ; born March 24, 1956 in Aston , Birmingham ) is a former British sprinter . With a height of 1.65 m, her competition weight was 57 kg.

At the age of 16 she took part in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In the 100-meter run , she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. In the 4 x 100 meter relay , she did not survive the lead with the British team.

After becoming Junior European Champion in the 100 m in 1973, she won silver at the British Commonwealth Games in 1974 with the English relay behind the Australians. In 1976 she won over 60 m silver at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Munich. With 7.25 s she was only 0.01 seconds behind the Swede Linda Haglund .

At the Commonwealth Games in 1978 she won the 100 m in 11.27 s in front of the Australians Raelene Boyle and Denise Boyd . In the 200 m she finished second behind Boyd in 22.89 s, and in the English relay she won ahead of Canada and Australia. Shortly afterwards she won silver at the European Championships in 1978 with the British quartet behind the relay from the Soviet Union.

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, she was eliminated in the semi-finals over 100 m and was eighth over 200 m in 22.80 s. With the British relay she won the bronze medal behind the teams from the GDR and the Soviet Union. With a relay victory for the English team at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 , she ended her career.

Sonia Lannaman is 1.65 m tall and weighed 57 kg during her active time. In 1979 she was awarded the MBE .
