Beverley Lanita Callender (born Goddard ; born August 28, 1956 in Barbados ) is a British sprinter of Barbadian origin who specialized in the 200-meter run , but was particularly successful internationally as a relay runner .

Career

Callender appeared at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal over 200 meters, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals. At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978 , she finished fourth for England in the 200-meter run and fifth in the 100-meter run . As the starting runner of the English 4 x 100 meter relay , she won the gold medal together with Kathy Smallwood , Sharon Colyear and Sonia Lannaman . In the same line-up, this quartet, now starting for Great Britain, won the silver medal behind the Soviet and ahead of the East German team just a few weeks later at the European Athletics Championships in Prague .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow Callender won together with Heather Hunte , Kathy Smallwood-Cook and Sonia Lannaman the bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay in the British national record time of 42.43 seconds. Callender also achieved one of her most important individual results with sixth place in the 200-meter run. In 1981 she won the 100-meter run at the Universiade in Bucharest . At the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1982 , she won again the silver medal in the relay together with Wendy Hoyte , Kathy Smallwood and Shirley Thomas . Callender had her next season success a short time later at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane . Together with Kathy Smallwood, Sonia Lannaman and Wendy Hoyte, she ensured that England successfully defended her title.

Also at the first World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 Callender was successful again in the relay. Behind the highly superior GDR team around Marita Koch and Marlies Göhr , she finished second with Joan Baptiste , Kathy Smallwood and Shirley Thomas in 42.71 seconds. In the 100-meter run, however, she did not get beyond the quarter-finals. A year later, Callender won her second Olympic medal. As in the previous Olympic Games, she reached the bronze medal again in 1984 in Los Angeles in the British season together with Simmone Jacobs , Kathy Smallwood and Heather Hunte.
