The Olympic boycott had little effect on the competition. The favorites were the three Soviet runners Olga Minejewa, Nadija Olisarenko - former Nadezhda Muschta - and Tatiana Prowidochina. Then there were the two GDR athletes Martina Kämpfert and Hildegard Ullrich - later Hildegard Körner.

In the final race, world record holder Olisarenko took the lead from the start. The field followed closed up to the 400 meter mark. How fast the pace was was shown by the intermediate time, which was 56.41 seconds at this point. After five hundred meters Minejewa started an attack, which Olisarenko fended off by increasing the speed. The two now clearly stand out from the rest of the field. In the finish curve, behind Prowidochina, who ran in third place, there was a gap to the other runners. With a strong final sprint, Nadija Olisarenko finally ran to a new world record and Olympic victory. Olga Minejewa secured the silver medal and Tatiana Prowidochina rounded off the superior success of the Soviet runners with her third place. Martina Kämpfert and Hildegard Ullrich followed in the next places. All eight finalists undercut the 2-minute mark. In Montreal in 1976 seven runners had succeeded, in 1972 in Munich there were five.
