There was no clear favorite for this competition. The US athletes who topped the annual world best list were not there because of the Olympic boycott. The 1976 Olympic champion , Alberto Juantorena, was not yet in full strength after an operation on the Achilles tendon , but reached the finals. The outcome of the race was very open.
As expected, the final was close. When it came to the home stretch, GDR runner Frank Schaffer led just ahead of the Belgian Alfons Brydenbach. The Briton David Jenkins was still doing well here. In the last 100 meters, Viktor Markin, USSR, was the fastest. Running on lane two, he passed all competitors and became Olympic champion in 44.60 seconds. With a strong finish, the Australian Rick Mitchell took the silver medal just over two tenths of a second behind. Three hundredths of a second behind him, Frank Schaffer was third in front of Alberto Juantorena and Alfons Brydenbach.
Viktor Markin won the first Soviet Olympic victory over 400 meters .
Frank Schaffer won the GDR's first medal in this discipline.
