Defending champion Hillman could not keep the pace set by the favorites Halswelle and Barker early on. On the home stretch, the outsider Pilgrim overtook the two leaders and still won by a margin. The distances were given as follows: neck shaft 4 yards behind Pilgrim, Barker 2 yards behind neck shaft.
