Nikolina Shtereva

Nikolina Shtereva ( Bulgarian Николина Щерева , English transcription Nikolina Shtereva ; born January 21, 1955 in Sofia ) is a former Bulgarian middle-distance runner .

Her first major international success was the 800 m victory at the European Indoor Championships in Munich in 1976 . In the same year she won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Montreal over 800 m and was fourth over 1500 m . In 1979 she won another 800 m title at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna. At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 she was seventh over 800 m and was eliminated over 1500 m in the prelim.

A bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble in 1981 over 800 m was followed by seventh place at the European Championships in Athens in 1982 over the same distance. At the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis in 1987 , she was eighth over 1500 m.

What is remarkable is the range of distances over which she became national champion. In 1974 she won the 400 m and 800 m. It was followed by eight more titles over 800 m (1976, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989), three over 1500 m (1980, 1985, 1986) and one over 10,000 m (1986). In the hall she was five times Bulgarian champion over 800 m (1974, 1976, 1979, 1980, 1987), twice over 1500 m (1976, 1987) and once over 3000 m (1986).
