doping

In this competition, one relay, the team of Russia, was affected by two doping cases:

  • Antonina Kriwoschapka tested positive for the anabolic steroid dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (Turinabol) during follow-up checks on samples . This was announced by the IOC on February 1, 2017. As a result, the Russian relay runners lost their medals, Jamaica advanced to silver and Ukraine to bronze.
  • On November 30, 2017, the IOC announced that Natalia Nasarova , who had been used in the preliminary phase, had also been convicted of taking dehydrochloromethyltestosterone during follow-up tests.

In addition to the athletes, who sometimes received their medals several years late, the athletes of the Ukrainian relay, who were not allowed to advance in the heats, suffered. They would have been eligible to start in the final over their time of 3: 26.52 minutes.

Prelims

Two preliminary runs were carried out. The first three seasons of each run qualified for the final. In addition, the two fastest times, the so-called lucky losers , made it through. The directly qualified teams are highlighted in light blue, the lucky losers in light green.
