Jean Shiley
Jean Shiley Newhouse (born November 20, 1911 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania , † March 11, 1998 in Los Angeles ) was an American high jumper . With a height of 1.78 m, her competition weight was 61 kg.
In 1928, Jean Shiley was fourth at the Olympic Games with a jump of 1.51 meters. At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 , she won the title with the world record height of 1.65 meters before Mildred Didrikson with the same height. In the playoff , Shiley even jumped 1.67 meters, but the playoff was not recognized as a world record attempt. The world record was broken in 1939 by the British Dorothy Odam with 1.66 meters, as the national record of the United States, the record lasted until 1948.
