The town of Frösön on the island today belongs to the neighboring town of Östersund , but until 1970 it had the status of a köping , an independent market town . For almost a millennium, the island was the center of Jämtland , a center of trade and transport. It wasn't until 1879, when the railroad reached the city, that Östersund took on this role.

The island has been the place where the “ Jamtamot ”, a ting with its own laws, was held since the 10th century . Frösön is home to the so-called “ Frösöstein ” ( Frösöstenen ) from the 11th century, Sweden's northernmost rune stone and the only one in Jämtland. Among other things, he reports on the Christianization of the region at that time, from which the predecessor church of today's Church of Frösön ( Frösö kyrka ) also came.

Near the church is the former Trivialskola , which had existed since 1679 and was Sweden's only country school for a long time. In 1847 she was moved to Östersund.

Origin of name

Frösön is named after the fertility goddess Frö , and thus one of many places around Storsjön, the names of which come from Norse mythology .
