qualification
Date: August 1, 1992
For the qualification, the jumpers were drawn into two groups. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 17.00 m. Since only eight athletes exceeded this distance (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best jumpers from both groups to twelve participants (highlighted in light green). So finally 16.91 m was enough for the final.

final
Date: August 3, 1992
Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, eight of them by the required qualification distance, the others by their placement. All three athletes of the United Team were in the final, as were two Americans. The final field was completed by one participant each from the Bahamas, Bermuda, China, France, Cuba and Latvia.
The favorites were the Russian Leonid Woloschin, who started for the United Team, Vice World Champion and European Champion , and Mike Conley Sr. from the USA, third in the World Cup and silver medalist from 1984 . On the other hand, the reigning world champion, Kenny Harrison from the USA, could not participate due to an injury.
In the first lap, Voloshin took the lead with 17.32 m, but Conley pushed him out of the top position in the second round with the new Olympic record of 17.63 m. Frank Rutherford from the Bahamas also passed the Russian with 17.36 m. In the two following laps nothing changed in the classification. In the fifth round, US athlete Charles Simpkins improved to fourth with 17.29 m. In his last attempt, Charles Simpkins then scored 17.60 m and won the silver medal ahead of Frank Rutherford. Leonid Voloshin finished fourth ahead of Brian Wellman, Bermuda. Olympic champion Mike Conley Sr. recently even reached 18.17 m, but this jump could not be recognized as a world and Olympic record because of the strong tail wind .
The first eight jumpers conquered the 17-meter mark.
Frank Rutherford was the first triple jumper in the Bahamas to win a medal.
