Frank Rutherford

Frank Rutherford ( Frank Garfield Rutherford ; born November 23, 1964 ) is a former Bahamian triple jumper .

His first international success was a silver medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1986. The following year he won bronze at the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis . It was the first world championship medal in athletics for a Bahamian. He also won bronze at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis . At the World Championships in Rome he was eliminated in qualification as well as at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

In 1991 he finished eighth at the World Indoor Championships in Seville , but did not get beyond the preliminary round at the World Championships in Tokyo .

He celebrated his greatest success at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. He won bronze behind the Americans Mike Conley Sr. and Charles Simpkins . It was the first Olympic medal for the Bahamas since 1964. At the World Championships in 1993 in Stuttgart and 1995 in Gothenburg , he was eliminated from the qualification.

At his third Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta, he was eleventh. In 1999 he won silver at the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Championships.

Frank Rutherford holds a degree in economics from the University of Houston . After the end of his sporting career, he founded the Frank Rutherford Foundation, a foundation that provides athletic scholarships for US universities for young Bahamian athletes. At the beginning of 2003 he was awarded the MBE for his services to sport .
