Routing

Most of the competition was held on Zona Franca Street . The street is about 1.5 km southwest of the Olympic Stadium . The start was on the Zona Franca and the course was about 2000 meters long and had to be completed 24 times. The route then led over Carrer del Foc and Passeig Olimpic to the stadium, where the finish line was after a final lap on the running track.

Course of competition

Date: August 7, 1992

The favorites were u. a. the two Andrei Perlow, owner of the world record and reigning European champion , and Aljaksandr Pataschou, reigning world champion , who start for the United Team . Added to this were the Mexican Carlos Mercenario, winner of the Pan American Games and first in the current world annual best list, the German Hartwig Gauder, who has been a constant medalist at all major championships for many years, and his compatriot Ronald Weigel, second at the 1988 Olympic Games .

The field stayed together for the first few kilometers. At ten kilometer a 20-strong top group had formed. After another five kilometers, nine walkers had left, including Weigel, Gauder, Perlow and Mercenario. Gauder later fell back into the chasing field. At half time of the race, the Finn Valentin Kononen was in the lead. At first he had pulled away with Pataschou and worked out a clear lead with him. After the 20 km mark, however, Pataschou gave up and Kononen was alone in front. Mercenario, Perlow, the Spaniards Jaime Barroso and Jesús Ángel García, Weigel, the Russian Waleri Spizyn, who started for the united team, the Mexican Miguel Rodríguez, the Pole Robert Korzeniowski and the Canadian Guillaume LeBlanc formed the chasing group, which were almost half a minute behind .

Less than ten kilometers further, the field had caught up with Kononen. Korzeniowski now took the lead, LeBlanc had given up the race. A short time later, the Frenchman attacked René Piller and took over the lead. Perlow and Mercenario followed one minute behind, with Korzeniowski a few seconds behind. Weigel followed a minute and a half behind the Pole. Gauder had meanwhile overcome his weak phase and fought his way back to tenth place. Perlow had taken the lead five kilometers from the finish. Piller was half a minute behind. After another fifteen seconds, Korzeniowski followed ahead of Mercenario and Weigel. Piller's strength dwindled noticeably on the steep section uphill to the stadium. He kept falling back. Before entering the stadium tunnel, Korzeniowski, who had caught up with Mercenario, was disqualified after his sixth warning for not following the walking rules. Andrei Perlow won the race almost two minutes ahead of Carlos Mercenario. Ronald Weigel won the bronze medal a minute and a half behind, ahead of Valeri Spizyn and the Czechoslovak Roman Mrázek. Hartwig Gauder achieved sixth place with a strong final section.
