final

Date: October 16, 1964, 2:30 p.m.

Weather conditions: sunny, 18-21 ° C, 47-57% humidity

The Pole Józef Szmidt, Olympic champion in 1960 and world record holder , did compete, but after a knee operation a few months before the games he was not expected to win.

In the final, the Briton Fred Alsop reached 16.46 m in the first attempt. So he did not lead long, because Szmidt jumped 16.65 m in the second lap. Before the last three rounds with the best six athletes, this order remained at the top. But in rounds four and five, two Soviet jumpers triumphed. First Viktor Kravchenko reached 16.57 m, then Oleg Fjodosejew rose to 16.58 m. So Alsop was ousted from the medals. In his last attempt, Józef Szmidt even improved his own Olympic record to 16.85 m and surprisingly repeated his Olympic victory in 1960.

As in 1960, a Pole won in front of two jumpers from the Soviet Union.
