The two US runners Blaine Lindgren and Hayes Jones were considered favorites for this race. A thigh injury prevented Willie Davenport from achieving a fifth successive triple success for the USA, who was eliminated in the semifinals.

Hayes, who was considered the fastest starter, was in the lead from the start in the final. Lindgren was able to catch up almost to the last hurdle, but Jones pulled on the last few meters and was Olympic champion with a tenth of a second ahead of Lindgren. The bronze medal was won by the Soviet hurdler Anatoly Michailow, who finished the race at the same time - electronically only four hundredths of a difference - with Lindgren. Better times were not possible given the difficult conditions with constant rain and cool temperatures.

Anatoly Mikhailov won the first Soviet medal in this discipline.

In the 15th Olympic final there was the 13th US victory. It was also the tenth US double success.
