The favorite for gold was Tamara Press, world record holder and European champion from 1962 .

In the final, Press started with a failed attempt. Instead, the German outsider Ingrid Lotz came to the fore. She hurled the disc on a new Olympic record . Behind her was the Romanian Lia Manoliu, who had also exceeded the old record with her litter. In the second round the Bulgarian Wirschinija Michajlowa moved up to second place, Press placed fourth with her litter. In rounds three and four the order did not change, but both Manoliu and Michajlowa improved their previous bests. In the fifth attempt, Press managed a throw that one would have expected from her beforehand. But it was very close, its width exceeded Lotz's best attempt by just six centimeters. It was another Olympic record. At the same time, Lia Manoliu moved past Wirschinija Michajlowa to third place. With that the medals were distributed, the last round brought no change in the ranking.
For Lia Manoliu it was the fourth game. In 1952 in Helsinki she was sixth, in 1956 in Melbourne ninth and in 1960 in Rome she had won the bronze medal as now. Her greatest success with Olympic gold in 1968 in Mexico City was still ahead of her.
