If fewer than twelve starters had achieved this, which was not the case, the field of final starters would have been filled with the next best jumpers except for twelve participants. The favorite was the world record holder Tatiana Shchelnakova from the Soviet Union, reigning European champion from 1962 . Like four years earlier, British rider Mary Rand made the longest jump in qualifying in difficult weather conditions. Back then in Rome nothing worked out in the final and Rand had to be content with ninth place. She was so disappointed that she had already thought of quitting.
But this time it looked different. In the first final jump she improved her Olympic record from qualification by seven centimeters and took the lead. The Polish Irena Kirszenstein took the silver medal rank in the second attempt, Shchelnakova was third after the third round. The bronze medalist from Rome, Hildrun Laufer - who started in 1960 under her maiden name Claus - only missed the final battle of the best six because of the poorer second attempt. In the fifth round, Mary Rand set a new world record with 6.76 m. All of her jumps in the final fight were further than Irena Kirszenstein's best, who eventually won silver. Tatiana Shchelkanova's third place didn't change either. The Briton won the first of three medals here in Tokyo . Silver in the pentathlon and bronze in the 4 x 100 meter relay should follow.
Just two centimeters behind Shchelkanowa, the German Ingrid Becker, who had been ninth in the high jump four years earlier , came fourth. Becker should have a long successful career u. a. with two Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon - 1968 - and over 4 x 100 meters - 1972 - before you.
Mary Rand won the first medal and the first Olympic victory for a British woman in the long jump .
