Viorica Viscopoleanu , née Viorica Belmega (born August 8, 1939 in Budenez , Romania , today Storozhynets district , Ukraine ) is a former Romanian athlete . She became an Olympic champion in the long jump in 1968 .

Olympic games

Viorica Viscopoleanu took part in the Olympic Games three times, each time reaching the final. In 1964 she reached fifth place with 6.35 m, with eight centimeters missing from the bronze medal. In 1968 she jumped the first attempt at the final with a world record of 6.82 m. With any of her other four valid jumps, she would also have achieved a medal, but with the world record she clearly won gold with 14 centimeters ahead of second-placed British Sheila Sherwood . In 1972 Viorica Viscopoleanu finished seventh again with 6.48 m.

European championships

Viscopoleanu was also able to reach the final three times at the European Open Air Championships. In 1966 she finished fifth with 6.33 m. In 1969 she won silver with 6.45 m behind the Polish Mirosława Sarna with 6.49 m. In 1971 she was able to reach sixth place again with 6.39 m.

At the European Indoor Games Viscopoleanu won bronze in 1967 and 1968. At the first European Indoor Championships in 1970 she won gold with 6.56 m in an extremely tight competition in front of the West German Heide Rosendahl with 6.55 m, the Polish Sarna with 6.54 m and the GDR jumper Burghild Wieczorek with 6.53 m. In 1971 Viscopoleanu won another bronze medal. Her last final ranking at international championships was fifth at the 1974 European Indoor Championships.

Others

With a height of 1.67 m, her competition weight was 55 kg. Viscopoleanu ended her career at the age of 36 and subsequently became a coach. She is married and has two kids.
