Ivana Španović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Ивана Шпановић ; born May 10, 1990 in Zrenjanin ) is a Serbian long jumper .

Career

Španović celebrated her first international success at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Marrakech , where she reached eighth place in the long jump in qualification and fifth place in the semifinals over 100 meters . At the Junior World Championships in Beijing in 2006 she reached the final in the long jump and finished seventh. At the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham she reached only an 18th place with 6.18 m in the qualification and therefore no starting place in the finals. In the same year she started again at the Youth World Championships in Ostrava and finished the final with 6.41 m in second place, which she won silver. At the Junior European Championships 2007 in Hengelo she reached second place in the qualification. She could not place in the final. In July 2008 Španović won gold at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz .

She was then nominated for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . In Beijing, however, she missed the final round in 16th place and was eliminated after qualifying. She finally won gold at the 2009 Summer Universiade . A year later she qualified for the final at the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona and ended up eighth with a jump of 6.60 m. At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow , she finished third with a personal best of 6.82 m. This makes Španović the first Serbian athlete to achieve a medal at world championships. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , she was able to repeat this success with the bronze medal and the national record of 7.01 m. At the end of the year, Španović was voted Serbian Sportswoman of the Year. In 2016 she became European champion in Amsterdam and won the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with a national record of 7.08 m behind the two Americans Tianna Bartoletta (7.17 m) and Brittney Reese (7.15 m).

Španović has been successful at the national level since 2006. From 2006 to 2008 she won the national junior title in the long jump three times in a row and in 2009 also in the 100 meter run. In 2008 she also won the Serbian championship title in the senior long jump. In 2009 she was also able to win the Junior Balkan Championship. One of her trademarks are her long fingernails, which she often painted in striking colors. Ivana Španović would like to see this as a throwback to great athletes like Florence Griffith-Joyner and Gail Devers .

At the European Indoor Championships in her home country in 2017 , she lived up to her role as a favorite and showed three jumps over seven meters and thus secured the gold medal. Her best attempt of 7.24 was only ever surpassed by Heike Drechsler and Galina Tschistjakowa .
