Bob Hayes, unbeaten in the 100 meter distance since 1962, was the top favorite. His main competitors were the Cuban Enrique Figuerola and the Canadian co- holder of the world record , Harry Jerome.
In the final, Hayes was drawn to track one. This track was in a desolate condition because of the rain of the previous day and especially because of the 20 km walkers and 10,000 meter runners . But Hayes ran for the Olympic victory, which he achieved with almost two tenths of a second advantage. In addition, he also set the existing world record. In this race of a two-class society with a superstar and seven extras, who, however, all delivered class times, Figuerola and Jerome lived up to their roles as medal candidates. The Cuban won a thin silver medal ahead of the Canadian, who had already been a favorite in Rome in 1960 , but was unable to make it to the semi-finals there due to injury. The Pole Wieslaw Maniak and the German Heinz Schumann finished fourth and fifth as the best Europeans.
Enrique Figuerola won the first medal for Cuba over 100 meters.
