Tom Robinson (athlete)

Tom Robinson (actually Thomas Augustus Robinson ; born March 16, 1938 in Nassau ; † November 25, 2012 there ) was a Bahamian sprinter .

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he was eliminated over 100 m and 200 m in the preliminary run.

In 1958 he won the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff over 220 yards and won silver over 100 yards. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he reached the semi-finals over 100 m and 200 m.

In 1962 he won the Central America and Caribbean Games over 100 m and won silver over 100 yards at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth . Eighth place over 100 m at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo was followed by a silver medal over 100 yards at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966 .

In his fourth Olympic participation in 1968 in Mexico City over 100 m in the preliminary run and with the Bahamian team in the 4 x 100 meter relay in the semifinals.

The Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium , built in 1981 in his hometown of Nassau, was named after him. In 2012 he died of gastric cancer diagnosed in 2008 .
