Weather conditions: clear to cloudy, approx. 19.5 ° C, lateral tail wind at approx. 3.7 m / s.

The top favorites were Gisela Mauermayer and Jadwiga Wajs. The Polish woman had broken the world record five times between 1932 and 1934 . Then the German broke the record five times before the games in Berlin .

With her first attempt, Wajs clearly exceeded the existing Olympic record . Mauermayer countered with her first throw and thus established the final score. Both athletes were the outstanding discus throwers of those years. This was also expressed in the result. The bronze medalist Paula Mollenhauer was almost six and a half meters behind Wajs, Mauermayer and the Pole were the only ones in this competition to surpass the 40-meter mark.

Gisela Mauermayer won the first German gold medal in the women's discus throw .
