All three runners from the USA and Great Britain had qualified for the final. The starting field was completed by one participant each from the Soviet Union and one from Canada.
One of the top favorites, world champion Greg Foster from the USA, could not start in Seoul due to an injury sustained shortly before the US Olympic qualifications . As a result, 1984 Olympic gold medalist Roger Kingdom was considered a favorite, especially after improving the Olympic record in the quarterfinals . The strongest competitors were the two Britons Jonathan Ridgeon and Colin Jackson, who had finished second and third behind Foster at the 1987 World Championships.
Roger Kingdom was in the lead from the start in the final, increasing his lead and finally won in 12.98 s. This new Olympic record was the first time under 13 seconds in Olympic Games and only the second ever that was not achieved in altitude conditions. Kingdom won by three meters over Colin Jackson. The bronze medal was won by US runner Tonie Campbell, followed in fourth place by the Soviet athlete Vladimir Schischkin. Jonathan Ridgeon crossed the finish line in fifth, directly ahead of fellow countryman Tony Jarrett. The Canadian Mark McKoy was seventh, the third US runner Arthur Blake was the last to cross the finish line.
Roger Kingdom won the 17th gold medal for the USA in the 21st Olympic final. Kingdom and his compatriot Lee Calhoun - 1956 and 1960 - are the only hurdles so far to repeat their Olympic victories.
