Defending champion Lee Calhoun, who set Martin Lauer's world record shortly before the games, was seen as the favorite . Lauer, European champion from 1958 , was considered his greatest competitor, but he no longer had the shape from his world record year 1959.
The fastest from the starting blocks in the final came Calhoun, who was very thin over the entire distance. His compatriot Willie May, however, was right on his heels. Calhoun threw himself into the target, which brought him the Olympic victory. May was only a hundredth of a second behind. Hayes Jones completed the US team's triple success, Lauer finished fourth.
In the 14th Olympic final, Lee Calhoun achieved the twelfth victory of a US runner. It was also the sixth US win in a row. Calhoun himself repeated his Olympic victory in 1956 after being banned for a year in 1958 because he had accepted gifts on a television program on the occasion of his wedding.
So far, the USA has recorded eight triple successes over 110 meter hurdles , the last four in a row.
Of the 41 medals awarded so far - in 1896 there was only a first and a second place - US runners won 34.
The times achieved seem disappointing at first. However, the runners faced a pretty strong headwind. In other disciplines, too, the wind information was obviously only accurate and correct with a tailwind, but always showed a value of 0.000 m / s with a headwind.
