The individual final over 100 meters featured six starters from six nations. Therefore, there was no clear favorite before the relay races. In the second run, the US team set a new world record and was thus the clear gold candidate.

In the final, the German relay team developed a lead of almost two meters that lasted until the last change. Wilma Rudolph was able to close the gap to Jutta Heine and overtake him. Ultimately, the US relay was ahead by about three meters. The team of Poland won the bronze medal.
