The US relay was the favorite and the strongest opponents were the athletes from Russia.

Compared to the preliminary stages, there were a total of five line-up changes in four seasons:

  • US Season - Gail Devers ran for Carlette Guidry.
  • Bahamas - Debbie Ferguson has been replaced by Chandra Sturrup.
  • Jamaica - Juliet Cuthbert ran for Gillian Russell, Merlene Ottey for Andria Lloyd.
  • France - Marie-José Pérec replaced Delphine Combe.

In the final, the Russians led up to the first change. The second runner in the USA, Gail Devers, brought her relay past the Russian Galina Maltschugina to second place, while Chandra Sturrup from the Bahamas changed as leader. The gaps between the teams were very close. The third US runner, Inger Miller, ran a strong race in the corner, the US relay was now ahead. Gwen Torrence secured US victory. Behind the USA, the final runner of the Bahamas Pauline Davis crossed the finish line in second place before Jamaica. Russia came fourth ahead of Nigeria and France.

In the 16th Olympic final of the women's 4 x 100 meter relay there was the ninth victory for the USA. It was also the fourth in a row.
The Bahamas won the first Olympic medal in this discipline.
