final
August 2, 1996, 9:30 p.m.
In the final, three Ethiopians, three Chinese, and two Kenyans each faced a participant from Australia, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain and South Africa.
The favorites were the reigning world and European champion Fernanda Ribeiro from Portugal, the Chinese world record holder and 5000 meter Olympic champion Wang Junxia, the Ethiopian Olympic champion from 1992 and vice world champion Derartu Tulu and the Kenyan World Cup third Tegla Loroupe.
First of all, the hot conditions in Atlanta made it difficult for the runners to tackle this long distance. Fast times were not really to be expected. On the first eight rounds, Catherina McKiernan from Ireland did the lead work. Then Ribeiro took the lead and stayed there until halfway through the race. As expected, the pace stayed within limits, the field remained closed for a long time, but gradually got smaller as the race progressed. The individual 1000 meter times up to the 9000 meter mark were between 3:04 min and 3:12 min. The Kenyan Sally Barsosio replaced Ribeiro in the meantime at the top, then the Spaniard Julia Vaquero took over the lead, which, however, had to be demolished along with other runners. With three laps to go, there were still five runners in a leading group. Ribeiro ran in front of Wang, the two Ethiopians Gete Wami and Tulu and Loroupe. After another four hundred meters there were only four runners with a medal chance: Ribeiro, Wang, Tulu and Wami. Wang now took the initiative and accelerated the pace considerably. Only Ribeiro could still follow her. So two groups of two had formed. Wang and Ribeiro fought for gold, Wami and Tulu for bronze. In the final lap, Wang broke away from Ribeiro by a few meters and the Chinese was in front until the end of the last corner. But the Portuguese still had plenty of reserves and passed the leader on the home straight, Fernanda Ribeiro won the gold medal. At 2: 49.99 minutes, the last thousand meters were so fast that there was even a new Olympic record in the end. Wang Junxia as a silver medalist also remained below the previous record. Gete Wami decided the sprint for bronze clearly ahead of her compatriot Derartu Tulu. Japanese rider Masako Chiba took fifth place ahead of Tegla Loroupe and Yuko Kawakami, also from Japan.
Fernanda Ribeiro was the first Olympic champion from Portugal in the women's 10,000 meter run .
Wang Junxia won the first Chinese medal in this discipline.
